iDEN was developed in the late 1980s and officially launched in the 1990s. It was designed to combine the functionalities of a digital cellular network with the capabilities of a two-way radio system. The technology gained traction in the late 1990s and early 2000s, particularly with the emergence of Nextel Communications, which became one of the largest providers of iDEN services in the United States. Over the years, iDEN faced competition from other digital communication technologies and ultimately began to decline in usage as newer technologies emerged.
