Maintenance

8-40

If electrolyte (battery fluid) gets into
your eyes, flush them with clean
water for at least 15 minutes and
get immediate medical attention. If
possible, continue to apply water
with a sponge or cloth while on the
way to a doctor.
If electrolyte gets on your skin, thor-
oughly wash the contacted area. If
you feel pain or a burning sensa-
tion, get medical attention immedi-
ately.
When lifting a plastic-coated bat-
tery, excessive pressure on the end
walls could cause acid to spew
through the vent caps, resulting
in personal injury. Lift the battery
with a carrier or with your hands on
opposite corners.

To get the best service from a battery:

S

Keep it securely mounted.

S

Keep the top clean and dry.

S

Keep terminals and connections
clean, tight, and coated with petro-
leum jelly or terminal grease.

S

Rinse off spilled electrolyte immedi-
ately with a solution of water and bak-
ing soda.

S

If the vehicle will not be used for an
extended time, disconnect the battery
cables.

J

Tires

For reasons of proper performance,
safety, and better fuel economy, always
maintain recommended tire inflation
pressures and stay within the recom-
mended load limits and weight distribu-
tion.
