In Case of Emergency
6-30
WARNING
Changing a Tire:
When one of the back wheels is off
the ground, the transmission alone
will not prevent the vehicle from
moving or slipping off the jack,
even if the vehicle is in P (Park) or
1 (First). To prevent the vehicle
from moving when you change a
tire, be sure the parking brake is
set, then block (both directions) the
wheel that is diagonally opposite
(other side and end of the vehicle)
to the tire being changed. If the
vehicle slips off the jack, someone
could be seriously injured.
1. Park on a level surface off the right-
of-way and firmly set the parking
brake. Turn off the engine.
2. Shift an automatic transmission to
P (Park); shift a manual transmission
to R (Reverse).
3. Turn on the hazard warning flasher.
4. Remove the jack, jack handle, lug
wrench, and spare tire.
5. Block both the front and rear of the
wheel diagonally opposite the tire
being changed.
6. Use the tapered end of the lug nut
wrench to unscrew wheel ornaments
attached by retaining screws. Remove
any wheel trim. Insert the tapered end
of the lug nut wrench behind wheel
covers or hub caps and twist off.
